Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Do I need to have experience in order to tryout?

A: None at all. Approximately 50-75% of our players began their field hockey journey on tryout day. Our coaches have knowledge and experience to transform a complete beginner into an experienced field hockey player.

Q: What is the time commitment?

A: Practices are usually 2 hours a day every school day. Games take place during the week. Weekends are free except for tournaments.

Q: When are practices?

A: Practice times vary day to day (ex. 4-6pm on Mondays, 5-7pm on Thursdays), but usually are the same week to week. Field Hockey rotates between the grass fields and the main football turf. We also have to share the field equally between Football, Girls Flag Football, and Band which is why times vary.

Q: Where are practices held?

A: On the main football turf at Poway High School or on the grass fields behind the turf.

Q: How many games are in the season?

A: There’s 15-20 games in a season, the games take place during the week. No weekend games, unless there’s a tournament.

Q: How many tournaments are there in a season?

A: 1-2 tournaments that take place on weekends.

Q: How many teams are there?

A: We have 2 teams, JV and Varsity.

Q: Are there cuts for tryouts?

A: We like to have a roster of 15-18 on Varsity and 16-19 on JV. If we have more participants than these 31-37 roster range participating, then we will be making adjustments. Please don’t let this deter your athlete from trying out – we prioritize attitude, effort, and fitness level when we have to make these decisions.

Q: What is the expected fitness requirement?

A: It varies from year to year. We do have fitness tests to make sure athletes can handle what a typical game demands – the typical field hockey player runs 3-5 miles in a regular time game (60 mins). We suggest potential athletes do some running over the summer, especially running while it is “warm” outside (but not dangerously hot). We find the more you get used to the heat even in small increments, the easier it is when tryouts come around.

Q: Is there summer training being offered by the high school coaches?

A: At this time, coaches do not have any summer training planned for the 2025 season. Athletes may organize optional trainings with each other.

Q: Are there any clubs in the area where my athlete can try field hockey before tryouts?

A: Yes, here are a few that offer sessions in the spring and summer. Check each of them out and find what schedule works best for you and your family:
